JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- A 14-member committee from the National Academy of Sciences is holding a hearing about water contamination at Camp Lejeune as part of an investigation ordered by Congress last year.
Committee members also plan to tour contaminated sites on the sprawling Marine Corps base.
Base officials closed several wells in 1987, after contamination was discovered by solvents from a dry cleaners across the street from a base housing complex.
According to government estimates, up to 1 million people were exposed to the chemicals.
The committee is charged with reviewing scientific information on links between the contamination and its effect on unborn children, infants and adults.
The committee is part of the science academy's National Research Council.
