JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi State Department of Health says beginning July 1, anyone using a septic system must have it approved by health officials before permanent water can be turned on.
Previously, a homeowner would notify the local health department, which would recommend a wastewater system. On July 1, a homeowner will apply for final approval of the system after its completion to make sure it meets safety requirements.
Those in rural areas who use water wells instead of public water supplies are exempt.
Another regulation requires more maintenance by homeowners using septic systems that are not gravity fed or those using other alternative systems.
Health officials say homeowners can contract with a certified maintenance provider or they can become certified to do it themselves.
